« Participating Veterinarians | Lost and found pets » Foster CareIt is the goal of the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region to end the euthanasia of adoptable animals, and to place as many as possible into suitable, responsible, life long homes. Unfortunately, the Society receives numerous healthy animals under the age of 8 weeks as well as older animals with non-life threatening injuries. Under the Colorado Pet Animal Care & Facilities Act (PACFA), animals younger than 8 weeks may not be placed for adoption. Since the Society handles 20,000 – 22,000 animals a year, space is limited for keeping these animals until they are old enough or well enough for adoption. To accomplish this goal the Humane Society has created a Foster Care Program to place these animals in private homes until such time as they may be offered for adoption. This volunteer-based program provides a nurturing environment for animals so they may mature, heal, socialize and become adoptable. While this is a very flexible volunteer position, it requires a great deal of dedication and time. The benefits, however, can be extremely rewarding. You will receive unconditional love from your foster pet as well as a feeling of triumph when a foster animal finds a loving home. This is an ideal volunteer opportunity for anyone willing to make a short term commitment toward helping an individual pet. If you think you are interested in becoming a Foster Parent, here are few things to consider: Animals brought into your home may have a contagious disease that can infect your own animals if exposed. It is for this reason we recommend current vaccinations for all animals in your home and, when appropriate, a separate room for the fostering. Most often these are young animals that enjoy chewing and scratching and may be destructive if not adequately supervised or confined when supervision is not possible. Will your work schedule allow you to take home animals that may need medication during the day or follow-up veterinarian care for those with injuries? If you are interested in becoming a Foster Parent please contact the Foster Care Coordinator @ 719-473-1741 extension 136 for more information about the program. |
