Volunteer

Volunteers are critical to the success of the Humane Society. As a private, non-profit organization, we rely heavily on the assistance of our caring, dedicated and hard-working volunteers.

Our volunteers enjoy helping animals, people and their community. They help homeless animals by making them feel better during their stay at the shelter (by walking them, teaching them the basic manners necessary for people to want to adopt them, bathing and grooming them, and cuddling them). They help them find good homes (by introducing animals to potential adopters). They help people by assisting them in finding their lost pets, and by helping them find a companion animal that is appropriate for their lifestyle.

They help their community by educating children (and adults) about responsible pet ownership and kindness to animals. They take shelter animals (dogs, cats, rabbits and guinea pigs) to visit elderly or sick people in hospitals and nursing and assisted-living homes, and to schools and facilities for mentally, emotionally or physically-challenged children. Volunteers help advertise homeless animals for adoption on local television and radio stations and in the newspaper.

Volunteers also assist at many special Humane Society community and fund-raising events. Some volunteers (members of our Board of Directors) help to set shelter policies.

In an average year, our volunteers contribute over 25,000 hours in support of the approximate 22,000 lost and unwanted animals that come through the shelter doors. Please consider joining our team of friendly volunteers. You, too, will enjoy the experience! The next page explains how to become a volunteer.
